On June 20, 2025, UNITAR, Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies & CECOE ETHIOPIA presented "Democracy's Silent Partners: Civil Society in Electoral Processes." This webinar explored the critical yet often underrecognized roles that civil society organizations play across the electoral cycle - from pre-election preparation to election day monitoring and post-election accountability. Our expert speakers shared insights from their extensive experience: Yishak Abebayehu (Senior Program Officer, CECOE) discussed pre-election civic engagement, highlighting how CSOs reach underserved communities through innovative voter education, legal reform advocacy, and conflict prevention. Eyuel Zelealem (Program Coordinator, CECOE) examined post-election civic engagement, focusing on observation report analysis, electoral justice advocacy, and building public trust in democratic institutions. Dr. Franklin Oduro (Country Director, NDI) addressed election day monitoring, emphasizing how CSOs ensure inclusive participation, transparent vote counting, and results verification. The discussion revealed how CSOs act as democracy's "silent partners" by: Simplifying complex electoral laws for grassroots communities. Using digital tools and local media to bridge information gaps. Providing independent verification of electoral processes. Mediating tensions to prevent election-related violence. Advocating for electoral reforms based on evidence. Speakers also highlighted growing challenges including shrinking civic space, digital repression, political backlash, and resource constraints, while sharing successful coalition-building strategies from Ghana, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Kenya. This webinar was part of the She Votes Africa initiative, generously financed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. 🔗 Learn more about the Master’s Degree in electoral Policy and Administration: https://unitar.org/courses-learning-e... #ElectoralIntegrity #CivilSociety #DemocracySupport #KnowledgeToLead --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) delivers innovative training and conducts research on knowledge systems to increase the capacity of beneficiaries to respond to global and constantly evolving challenges. ------------------ Stay tuned: Facebook: / unitarhq LinkedIn: / unitarhq Twitter: / unitar Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/unitarhq/?h...
