#USSOglala #Shipwreck #MaritimeHistory #ShipSalvage #PearlHarbor USS Oglala became infamous at Pearl Harbor—called a “cursed vessel” after she sank three times during her own recovery. This film follows how USS Oglala was wrecked by underwater shock: a torpedo that missed her still destroyed her through pressure and water-hammer physics, with chaos intensified by blasts near USS Helena at Ten-Ten Dock. To raise USS Oglala, Captain Wallin’s salvage team avoided a brute-force lift and used geometry—righting the hull first with a parbuckle system. Ten submarine salvage pontoons, each rated for 80 tons of lift, were rigged to anchor chains wrapped under the ship to generate a massive righting moment. The first trial on April 11, 1942 failed when rigging broke; the second on April 23, 1942 held—and USS Oglala rolled upright. Refloating was even harder. A wooden cofferdam extended the ship’s shell above high water so dewatering could work against leaks and riveted seams, while the deadly free surface effect kept stability near zero. Then came the nightmare rhythm: she sank again (June 25 and June 29), and a spectacular fire erupted on July 2—before the final float on July 3, 1942.
