Feet on Wall Exercises If you have any experience in a rehab setting or with yoga, you have probably seen people putting their feet on the wall during exercise. And while in some cases there are obvious benefits associated with the lower body being above the upper body, there is also a strong case to be made that even when inversion is not part of the exercise, putting feet on walls can give you a huge bang for your buck during floor-based or otherwise gravity lessened variations. We discuss the concept of reference centers in the feet. Reference centers are areas of sensory input that allow us to sense position in space and will help us achieve certain kinds of muscle activation. When it comes to the foot, different areas of contact correspond to various phases of the walking cycle (gait cycle). For the sake of example, I demonstrate my current three favorite activities for restoring mid-stance mechanics. In this case, we will reference the inner part of the foot including the heel, arch and big toe. If we wanted to construct an exercise to bias us towards the early or late phases of stance, we would bias heel vs. big toe contact respectively. This is something we will revisit in future videos.
