Grinch trees are fun decorations for Christmas. They are also easy to do and great to give as little gifts. Traditionally, they should look kind of wonky, like out of a Dr. Seuss book, but of course-you should decorate yours however you see fit! We start with a small evergreen tree, usually available around late fall and winter in 4" pots at your favorite garden center. Choose a fluffy and fat one. Next, you will need a light (26 gauge works well) spool of florist wire. If you don't have that, you can use any light wire, or yarn or sewing thread can work in a pinch as well. I chose a heavy ceramic decorative pot for the root ball in order to keep it upright and secure. You don't want your grinch tree to fall over! Start at the bottom, gently secure your wire to the tree. Start wrapping loosely and gently as you massage the tree into a downward bend. Once you reach the top of the tree, wrap it all the way back down to the base, and then back up to the top again. It is important that you do this gently, as you enforce the bend by 'massaging' the tree into shape. When you are all done with this step, you can add a crimped wire or other decorative wire or ribbon or thread of some kind- a bit of colour or sparkle will make your tree look more festive. Final steps are a ball or other ornament for the top, and a mini light string. It also looks nice if you cover the soil in the pot with a wee bit of moss. Other options for 'mulch' can include sand, decorative pebbles or anything else you have on hand.
