In today's episode - Today I'm catching up with horticulturist Eric Bookout to learn from her years of experience at the Atlanta Botanical Garden managing their expansive shade garden. When we take a hard look at what seems to be thriving we realize that there are actually quite a few great options. The of Erin's favorites is Farfugium japonicus or Leopard Plant. On many parts of the country people might know this plant as a fairly common houseplant but it is, alas, a fantastic dry shade garden plant! It sports striking foliage year round and attractive blooms. It has a wonderful lush appearance that makes a huge impact. Another natural choice would be Hosta. I love the resilience of this plant. That coupled with the incredible range of diversity makes hosta the queen of shade. Some other great dry shade lovers are Carex, which is now available with a whole new line of cool cultivars like Everillo, Aspidistra (Cast Iron Plant) is an oldie but goodie that is tolerant of some of the harshest dry conditions, and perhaps my favorite dry shade plant ever - Epimedium. I have adored Epimedium since I was a child and have had it in every garden since. It's understated beauty provides pops of whimsy and surprise in the garden when its delicate and almost magical blooms emerge and remind us why we love this plant so much.
