An amazing powder day of snowboarding in Nozawa Onsen with friends who live there, during the border closures during the pandemic. I've kept this video in my uploads for over a year, I didn't think it was that good quality. Yet realising now that the ski resort will never be so quiet on such prime snow conditions on a bluebird day, maybe ever again. How lucky we were to gather together and ride, especially for Leif's birthday. So I'm posting this one for the memories, as it's autumn/fall 2023 and winter is just around the corner. *A note to say that if you do ride/ski out of bounds, it is dangerous. As soon as you duck the rope you are not in the jurisdiction of the ski patrol in Japan. If is only mountain rescue and the police department who can help you if you're in trouble. If you do decide to go out of bounds, now that travel is back on, ski patrol are very strict, they may take your pass away. While also there has been deaths this past winter, due to the steepness of areas of Nozawa Onsen. We were all wearing beacons, shovel, probes in our backpacks, which doesn't guarantee safety in case of an accident but knowing also how to use your gear, at least doing an AST1 (Avalanche Skill Training 1) will give you the basics of how to use your gear and the risks involved in riding out of bounds. Or if you happen to have invested in the gear, take an hour and ask a knowledgeable friend how to use it. When riding, even on powder days, "no friends on a powder day" is total rubbish, your skiing/riding affects those around you, make sure to look after others around you and if you're alone, let someone know where you'll be.
