How the Zanclean Megaflood Shaped the Mediterranean Sea

Did you know that the Nile River once cut 2,500 metres lower than it does today leaving behind a deep submerged canyon? This is just one of the effects an almost completely dry Mediterranean had on the geology of the region. Around six million years ago two sea corridors joining the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean closed up causing the basin to dry out. This is now referred to as the Messinian Salinity Crisis and lasted one thousand years. The Mediterranean basin only refilled because of an immense flood caused by the opening of the Strait of Gibraltar between North Africa an the Iberian Peninsula. We now all this the Zanclean flood because the water gushed in at a remarkable speed in a relatively short space of time. These remarkable geological phenomena have left behind striking evidence for what happened and how it happened.
