Lummi Nation officer shot multiple times while trying to help driver after crash

A Lummi Nation Police Officer was shot multiple times early Monday morning while investigating a traffic incident, the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office reports. The officer, 37, was shot after approaching a driver whose vehicle had veered off the road into a ditch on the 3200 block of N. Red River Rd. shortly before 1 a.m. Investigators said that the officer tried to contact the driver, only to have the driver open fire on him, striking him several times. The suspect fled the scene, but law enforcement said they have arrested a 26-year-old man they believe shot the officer.
