Smoking causes back pain. Neurosurgeon Dr Arun L Naik explains in this video. Back pain is one of the common reasons for a doctor’s visit. One of the neglected part of back pain juggernaut is that smoker’s back pain. Smokers are more likely to develop chronic back pain than non-smokers. This is established in the medical studies done for decades. I will bring in some proven scientific reasons why smoking causes chronic back pain: Smoke has nicotine we all know and nicotine affects the brain areas that are involved in habit forming and addiction. Smokers develop a low threshold for back neck pain over the years. Hence in smokers that back and neck always hurt.Smoking is known to cause damage to minor joints in the body and causes arthritis. In the backbone there are minor joints called facet joints and smoking causes spinal arthritis which causes intense pain on movements. nicotine in cigarettes causes microvascular disease (a disease of the small blood vessels) Where in those tiny blood vessels supplying your spinal discs get clogged by small plaques due to smoking. The intervertebral discs get their essential nutrients from the microvasculature that is lining the endplates on both sides of the disc. If blood vessels become injured due to smoking, the discs don’t obtain the right nourishment, accelerating the degenerative process. Those discs are meant to cushion the vertebrae, and they degenerate faster in smokers. Once blood flow is restricted, your discs dry out and diseased and come out causing disc prolapse. Smoking interferes in the body handling of vital nutrient calcium which slows bone growth and repair. Smokers are at a higher risk for osteoporosis and tiny fractures in the spine causing back and neck pain . Smokers are prone to persistent coughing, and that can cause back pain. Smokers have diminished immunity. Our spinal bones and joints undergo multitudes of stresses during the day time and we have excellent recovery mechanisms in our immune system where our body repairs these stresses. Due to impaired immunity, smokers heal slowly and incompletely. Smokers are usually sedentary and have poor eating habits full of junk foods and alcohol. This triad of smoking, junk foods and alcohol is bad for the health of your spinal bones.
