TOPIC: GOD'S LEVEL OF EXPECTATIONS DIFFERS FOR EVERYONE REFERENCE TEXT :Exodus 8:22, Exodus 9:1-4, Matthew 6:31-33, 1 cor. 1:18-27, Acts 2:44-48, 1Peter 2:2, 1 John 2:1-3, 1 John 3:1-5, Genesis 37:1-7, James 3:1, 1 Samuel 5:1-8, 2Sam 6, Romans 9:6-14. In this sermon, Pastor Olu Akinsola-Olowa teaches that God’s expectations are not the same for everyone, and that those who belong to Him must understand their unique calling, identity, and the higher standard He requires of His own. God Relates Differently With Different People God created everyone — the Samaritans, the Gentiles, the Israelites, the Jews, the Arabs, and all people on the earth. Yet, His level of expectation for each person differs. Even among those who are in Christ Jesus, God’s expectations are not the same. This reveals the heart of God as a Father who understands that He has different kinds of children and relates with each according to His purpose for them. In Exodus 8:22, God distinguished between His people and the Egyptians. Yet even among the Hebrews, there was a group He referred to as *His own*. This pattern is seen throughout Scripture. Jesus had many disciples, but only 120 were gathered in Acts 1. Among them were the twelve, and even within the twelve, there was an inner circle of three. This shows that within the general assembly, there is always a subset — a people God calls His own. For such people, His expectations are higher. Do Not Compare Yourself With Others According to 1 Corinthians 1:18–27, those whom God has chosen and called by His name cannot afford to compare themselves with others — even with other so-called Christians. Our calling, purpose, and responsibility before God are different. Jesus also warned in Matthew 6:31–33 that we should not pursue life the way unbelievers do — worrying, competing, or comparing ourselves with others. As God’s children, we are not expected to chase what the world is running after. Our focus must be on pleasing God and seeking His kingdom first. There Are Levels of Growth and Expectation in Christ In Christianity, there are different levels of growth and responsibility: 1 Peter 2:2 speaks of newborn believers who desire the sincere milk of the Word. 1 John 2:1–3 speaks of children growing in obedience and relationship with God. Each believer is at a different stage, and each has a different assignment. Therefore, our work and expectations before God may differ from those of other Christians. As sons of God: We must not live by comparison. We must not worry about what others are pursuing. We must not treat the Word of God casually. God expects His own to respond differently to His Word. God’s Wisdom vs. The World’s Wisdom There is the wisdom of the world, and there is the wisdom of God. Those who belong to God must choose His wisdom, even when it does not make sense to the world. In Acts 2:44–48, the early believers lived in a way that reflected God’s nature and purpose. They understood that they were different. God expects His people to behave differently from the world. At the same time, we should not expect too much from unbelievers, because they do not know the God we serve. As sons of God: We must not behave the way unbelievers behave. We must understand that God expects more from us. We must avoid judging others, because the Word of God produces results only in those whose hearts are open to Him. God’s Sovereignty and Faithfulness Scripture shows that God deals with people according to His purpose and sovereignty (Romans 9:6–14). He is faithful to all men, even unbelievers, as seen in 1 Samuel 5:1–8 and other accounts. This reminds us that God is working with every person according to His divine plan. But for those He calls his own the standard is higher, the calling is deeper, and the expectation is greater.
