Topic : Only the Violent Can Make It in God Scripture References: Matthew 11:12; Genesis 6:5; Genesis 8:20–21; James 4:1; Numbers 15:37–39; Genesis 3:1; Romans 7:14–20; 1 Peter 2:11; Galatians 5:17 In this sermon, Pastor Olu Akinsola-Olowa teaches that spiritual success is never accidental, and that making it in God requires deliberate, spiritual violence against the flesh, the heart, and the natural man. Jesus said, “From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.” This makes it clear that nobody accidentally succeeds in God. Spiritual success demands violence — not physical violence, but spiritual aggression against the flesh, the heart, and the natural man. The natural man does not think of good things. According to Scripture, the heart of man is continually inclined toward evil. Man does things simply to get what he wants. This was evident from the days of Noah, where God observed that the imagination of man’s heart was only evil continually. Even after the flood, the same nature remained. God therefore calls us to violently control our hearts and bodies. The heart cannot be handled lightly. It must be put under strict control, because left on its own, it will never choose God. The heart naturally resists worship, obedience, and surrender. It only wants enjoyment, pleasure, and self-gratification. Our hearts, eyes, and minds are naturally inclined toward harlotry — always desiring things, always seeking what is not right. Scripture warns us that lust wars against the soul, and that the flesh constantly fights against the Spirit. This battle is real, daily, and intense. The only way to control the heart is through the Word of God. Human effort alone is not enough. It takes the power of God and the mercy of God for the Spirit of God to rule over the flesh. As Apostle Paul explained, the things we want to do, we often don’t do, and the things we hate, we find ourselves doing — unless the Spirit takes control. To gain mastery, a believer must be crucified with Christ. This means refusing to please oneself, denying the flesh, and choosing obedience over comfort. Only those who are willing to be spiritually violent — against sin, lust, and self — can truly make it in God. The kingdom does not respond to casual Christianity. Only the violent take it by force.
