The Sovana necropolis is part of the archaeological park “Città del Tufo ”, and is located just a few kilometers from the homonymous town. The most important part of the site is located north of the Calesine stream and it presents, immersed in lush vegetation, some of the most famous and extraordinary monumental tombs left by the Etruscan civilization: the monumental tombs with a colonnaded front such as the Pola tomb and the Ildebranda tomb, which takes its name from the most famous citizen of Sovana who became pope with the name of Gregory VII. Very important is also the aedicule tombs of “Typhon” and “Winged Demons”, the latter discovered in 2004. In the other sector of the necropolis, called “Sopraripa” there are cube, semidado, and falsodado tombs, but above all the aedicule tomb of the Siren. The necropolis is also cut by “The vie cave”, ancient paths excavated in the tuff and in the open air, that connected the various centers and necropolises in the area as well as probably performed an important defensive function. Some stunning and evocative cave streets in the area pass through the necropolis such as the Cavone, the via cava di Poggio Prisca and the via cava of San Sebastiano.
