Why do so many recreational golfers feel that the harder they swing the less power they produce. There are several reasons, but a big one is patience. I’m not talking about the kind of patience that keeps you calm. It’s another type, here’s what I mean. A big mistake of many recreational golfers is to rush the top of the downswing. You need to be patient and let lag set naturally as a byproduct of your hip rotation. That gives you the feeling that your hands are waiting for your hips to open to the target. If you start the acceleration too fast at the top of the swing, the hands will slow down, that puts the rotational energy that you have created into the clubhead too soon. That will increase the clubhead speed too early in the downswing so that by the time the clubhead reaches the ball it will be ahead of your hands. And that’s a cast or a flip at the ball. That’s a power leak. If hip rotation doesn’t set the lag, you’ll have to generate speed with your upper body and arms. That means every time you want to get a big drive or distance on a shot you’ll try harder, by ripping that club down as hard as you can. That’s one reason why it might seem to you that that more force you are trying to create the worse the shot becomes. Without the type of hip strength, mobility and stability to control the rotational forces in the downswing, using your hips to drive through impact opening to the target with full hip and knee extension, you’ll have no choice but to use rear side force to get the clubhead to impact. The place to start is with mobility work that frees up the stiffness in your hips while using single leg exercises that help single leg strength and stability. This combination puts strength and stability in your newfound range of motion.
