Roberto Bertero, at the great Bonato-Klais organ in Villasanta (Italy), performs the "Cromhorne en taille" by Jean-Adam Guilain. The "Cromhorne en taille" by Jean-Adam Guilain is one of the most fascinating pieces from his collection “Pièces d'orgue pour le Magnificat”, published in 1706 and entirely devoted to ecclesiastical tones in the great French organ tradition. This piece belongs to the Fourth Suite in the Troisième ton and highlights a register typical of the period: the cromhorn, with its soft, slightly nasal timbre, entrusted to the tenor voice "en taille," while the other parts provide elegant and measured support. The result is an atmosphere of noble contemplation, almost a "suspension of time," in which the solo register emerges with an entirely French naturalness, evoking the refined style of the Grand Siècle. The composer, Jean-Adam Guilain, a still little-documented figure, was a musician of German origin active primarily in Paris in the early decades of the 18th century. Having arrived in the French capital around 1702, he became immersed in the city's musical scene and appears to have been close - perhaps even a student - of the celebrated Louis Marchand, to whom he dedicated this organ collection. We know of no permanent appointments for him in specific French cathedrals, but his works demonstrate a complete mastery of the national style and a clear familiarity with the Parisian organ school. Listening to the Cromhorne en taille therefore means experiencing not only a refined piece, but also the sensitivity of a composer who, though little-known, knew how to interpret and convey with great elegance the essence of the French Baroque organ. ______________________________________ Special thanks to: Parish of S.
