Bags of Hope Reach Deep Forest Schools of Latehar Benefactors Bring Hope to Jungle Schools of Latehar through Diocese of Daltonganj In keeping with its ongoing outreach to the poor and marginalized, the Diocese of Daltonganj continues to be a beacon of hope in some of the most inaccessible regions of Jharkhand. Deep inside the jungles of Barwadi Block in Latehar district amidst undeveloped terrain and near-nonexistent roads lie the remote villages of Bharniya and Morwai. Here, the Claretian Fathers, in collaboration with the Ursuline Sisters of the Ranchi Province, are rendering yeoman service by running middle schools under challenging conditions. St. Xavier’s Middle School, Bharniya, with just 42 students, and St. Theresa School, Morwai, with around 400 students, strive to provide quality education despite financial constraints. Many children walk five to ten kilometres daily to attend school, some even crossing a river without a bridge. January 24, 2026 became a memorable day for these young learners as Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas SFX visited both villages along with his team and the seminarians of Seeds of Hope. On the occasion, 400 school bags were distributed at Morwai and 40 at Bharniya. The bags were generously sponsored by the D’Silva family of Mumbai—Simon, Savonia, Sherwin, and Sian—for Morwai, and the D’Souza family—Edwyn, Clarissa, Rachel, and Darren—for Bharniya. At Morwai, Sr. Anita, the Principal, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Bishop and the Diocese, calling their presence in the jungles “a ray of hope.” Bishop Theodore, however, reminded the children to thank and pray for the benefactors who made the gesture possible. In both villages, children welcomed the Bishop with songs, while Fr. Rajesh Barla, Secretary of the Schools, lauded the Diocese of Daltonganj for its sustained outreach to the poor and forgotten. Bishop Theodore concluded by expressing deep gratitude to the benefactors and urging the children to remember them in their prayers, to the God they believe in. By Ravi Ranjan Tirkey, Seeds of Hope
