HYUNDAI GRAND i10 Vs HYUNDAI ELITE i20 Hyundai’s fluidic strategy has been appreciated a lot by the Indian customers. The theme debuted with Verna and slowly trickle down to the hatchback. Both Grand i10 and the Elite i20 are based on Hyundai’s radical design language and are amongst the better looking offerings in their respective segments. DESIGN: When it comes to design, both the cars have large aggressive pull back headlamps, a hexagonal air dam and a slim grille. Elite i20 is larger car and can be felt while comparing the side profile. On the other hand, Grand i10 has highlights like the moulding on the door and an integrated roof rail, whereas the Elite i20 has got a simple and sloping roof line along and blackened C pillars. The top end variant of both the cars are available with diamond cut alloy wheels, electrically foldable mirrors and integrated blinkers. Moreover, on the back, the tail lamps cut into the rear quarter panel on both the cars. Although It is more prominent in Elite i20. Overall, the Elite i20 is much better looking and is amongst the best looking hatchback in the country today. INTERIORS: The interiors on both the cars are very similar, dashboard are finished with black and beige combo and chrome has been used to highlight the AC vents, however Elite i20 feel more plush. Moreover, the similarities can be seen in leather wrapped steering wheel with integrated controls, in-built music system with Bluetooth, USB and Aux-inputs, chilled glove box, rear AC vents etc. Also an adequate space for bottle storage and for other nick nacks is availed in both the cars. The seats are more comfortable in i20 as compared to its younger sibling, whereas the front seats of Grand i10 are integrated with the headrest, something that spoils the premium feel of the cabin. Head room and the legroom is definitely better in the i20 and 5 passengers feel more comfortable in i20 as compared to Grand i10. Coming to the boot space, there is not much different in the boot space capacity. In Grand i10, it is 256 liters, while the Elite i20 has a capacity of 285 litres. The top end variant of both the cars come with Push button start, voice commands and with rear AC vents, but the automatic climate control is offered with Elite i20 only. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE: Both cars share the 1.2 litre Kappa 2 petrol engine that churns out a power of 83 PS of power and are also available in petrol automatic variant. The diesel alternative has the 1.4 litre CRDi engine in the i20 and 1.1 litre 3 cylinder unit in Grand i10. The 1.4 litre generates 90PS of power, while 1.1 brings out the power of 71 PS. The Grand i10 containing a 5 speed MT gearbox that brings out a fuel economy of 18.9 kmpl and 18.24 kmpl respectively, whereas the Elite i20 has got excellent drivability both in the city and on the highway. The elder sibling is mated with 6 speed manual transmission and gives a tested fuel economy of 22.54 kmpl. If you do the frequent motor ways, the 1.4 liter diesel mill has to be the pick, whereas the Grand i10 is best for intra city commutes. The steering wheel in both cars is light to use and quick u turns around crowded lanes in the city are at ease, but hardly perform the same way on highways. The Elite i20 is much more stable at higher speed in comparison to the Grand i10, but both the cars can handle broken roads very easily. However, the balance of performance and efficiency make the Elite i20 a pick. On the safety part, both cars are paired with two airbags and with ABS. VERDICT: The overall package of Elite i20 is better as compared to Grand i10. The top end diesel trim of Grand i10 is priced same as the base trim of Elite i20 diesel. If you commute more in the city, the Grand i10 wont disappoint you. On the other hand, if you want an extra cargo volume and more space at rear bench, the Elite i20 could be the choice.
