April wasn’t much different than March. It brought in east winds that created rough gnarly waters for long periods of time. The wiper failed us again and left a dirty view for what felt like an eternity. And then there was a brief moment in time that allowed our divers to be able to go in and clean the dome and repair the wiper. Here is this month’s breakdown of sightings: • Stoplight parrotfish made a couple appearances • Mutton snapper got up close • Tarpon – let’s just say that they are everywhere almost all the time • A smaller hammerhead took off as if it was either chasing something or was released from being caught – whatever it was – it was boogying • The tiniest jellyfish made an appearance (see if you can spot it) • Baitfish are schooling directly in front of the camera • Barracuda caught itself a moonfish and also got territorial with a tarpon • Cobia came around for a day (but I am thinking that it was caught because one day on the pier camera a lucky fisherman landed a massive cobia – congratulations on that catch, I am jealous) • Crabs are still falling, and they seem to appear on the pilings on some of the roughest days • Atlantic spadefish seemed to be plentiful • Wrasse went to town on a tiny little crab • Nurse sharks are making some daily visitations by the end of the pier • Blennies and crabs snacked on the dome while it was covered in growth (I like to think they were helping to clean the view for us) • Turtles were plenty but were low and further away from the camera this month • Octopus kept bouncing in to say Hi and offered up some tentacles with the cleaning of the dome • Smooth trunkfish were absolutely adorable • The eel made another appearance at night • Grey trigger was quite playful for a couple of days with a fishing line that got caught on the camera • Snook were there but laying low • Moonfish school moved in – we usually only get a couple mixed in with the lookdowns so this was a first for our camera • Spanish hogfish looked so vibrant against the blue waters • The barnacle (Gene) was active and we even spotted another smaller one below it (Ace) • The regulars: scrawled filefish, dusky damsel, rays, gray angelfish, chubs mangrove, wrasses, porkfish, lookdowns, jacks (yellow, bar, amber and pompano), arrow crab, burrfish, lemon shark, sennett, sheepshead, and either a pigfish or a sheepshead porgy – which is still up for debate) • Still missing: French angel, blue tang, and rainbow parrotfish Fish Recap Series — Produced & Edited by @RJPcreations in partnership with the City of Deerfield Beach
