Feb 18, 2025 8:07am I started my SMART train adventure 3 here in Novato CA starting here at Grant Ave and I proceeded south towards San Rafael each catch this day. This is a crossing I've wanted to film for a while here and was finally able to get out to it as this is a sideways cantilever crossing and SMART crossing that still features dual Safetran Mechanical Bells on the former NWP 70s era signals that remain here. Back when this crossing was owned by the NWP, The lights were originally 8 inch and 7 inch gate lights, and old 70s stub masts with Safetran Mechanisms later this became an abandoned crossing with it's gates removed but then the NWP came back to this crossing and changed equipment to 12 inch LED Lights and 4 inch incandescents gate lights and reinstalled the gates in the early 2010s. When SMART took over ownership of the crossing in the mid 2010s, they replaced the stubbed masts and Safetran Mechanisms with their gated mast Invensys Rail install long masts and new 7 inch gate lights and also added an exit quad gate for their original design for this crossing keeping the NWP equipment at this crossing on the cantilevers. SMART in the early 2020s would then come back to add onto this crossing when the infill station was added to the system here at the Novato Downtown Station. Pedestrian Signals were added and a pair of back side lights were added onto the quad exit gate and 7 inch gate lights were replaced separately each. Note also the pedestrian signals were installed with WCH E-Bells originally at the top and SMART decided to replace them with GS Type 3s at the side. As you see, the pedestrian gates deactivate before the roadway signals which is a typical SMART setup function.
