Since I've played the XBLA & Gems Collection versions of Sonic CD, it's about time I played one of the earliest ports of Sonic CD, the PC 1996 version! I haven't done a full longplay of this version until now, and like Gems Collection, it's one of my favorite versions of Sonic CD, and I'd go as far as to say it's my 2nd favorite version of Sonic CD, with Gems Collection being in 3rd and CD 2011 being in of course, 1st. I'm also aware that some longplays of this version exist too, but I decided to record mine in the intended resolution. It's actually, probably the most accurate port of Sonic CD. A lot of things from the Sega CD version were ported here, the same camera when Sonic is running, the Metal Sonic race playing the normal Good Future or Bad Future music depending on if you get one or the other, and even the Special Stages feel like they're ported from the Sega CD version, albeit probably much better in my opinion. Now yeah, the 2011 is still accurate for the most part, but I feel like the PC 1996 version gets more things accurate that makes it actually feel like you're playing the Sega CD version on a PC. And heck, the time traveling mechanic is faster too! Unlike the slow-ish buildup the 2011 version had. Though since Gems Collection is a port of the PC 1996 version, that also means of course, there's compressed sound effects, and of course the spammy explosion sound effect that chugs the framerate sometimes, though that ain't really an issue for me. The music is also the US soundtrack obviously, since I think the PC version only ever got the US soundtrack treatment, but I don't really mind that since the US version has the best soundtrack in my opinion, but even then, I could say that the JP and US soundtracks are equal if we aren't arguing which one's better. I did notice that the music does fade out at times too, which I especially noticed with Palmtree Panic Past, but again, I don't find worth complaining about. Oh yeah, and the Special Stages? The Special Stages here run far better than the Gems Collection port, since it's not oddly fast, giving you fair moments of destroying the UFOs unlike the Gems Collection version where Sonic runs like he's on steroids. That still didn't mean I have issues beating the Special Stages though, because the keyboard controls in the Special Stages are strangely unresponsive, which made most moments feel awkward, so perhaps I should've used a controller? But I just liked using the keyboard for an authentic experience, I guess. I think the thing Gems Collection definitely gets better though, is the cutscenes. I forgot to show the opening cutscene during this longplay, but like the Sega CD version, they are pretty compressed, but not nearly as bad as the Sega CD version despite the cutscenes in that version being charming in their own way. Though for being a port that was meant to run on Windows 95/Windows 98 PCs, I can't complain about the compression of the cutscenes, and even the sound effects as previously mentioned. The Gems Collection version, while being a port of PC 1996 like mentioned before as well, had the best looking cutscenes, considering the GameCube could display better FMV capabilities I suppose. So yeah, the Gems Collection version is better for it's cutscenes, but I think the PC 1996 version is better as far as accuracy goes. Though what else is there to say? This was definitely another really fun version of Sonic CD for me to play for the channel. Though, I'd really like to give a Special Thanks to Min3rR for making the pre-installed pack for this version! Without it, I would've never figured out how to get the music to work, especially because I used Sega PC Reloaded in order to make the game work with modern PCs.
