Townlands are Ireland's most ancient system of land division. Long before counties or parishes, the land was known and lived in through these small, local names: Cluain, Doire, Inis, Dun. Each place reveals a landscape feature, a local saint, an ancestral home, or half-forgotten legend. This video is a Litany of Names (both old and new) and a Tribute to these Names as living expression of culture and connection. The maps of 1838 were attempts at recording these names in English - a colonial attempt to catalogue and control the landscape. They also preserved Gaelic names that otherwise may have been lost or forgotten. Today, we live in the space between two languages - Hiberno-English - the rich, expressive English spoken in Ireland - is interwoven with Irish place names and idioms. In this fusion, we speak the names that have roots in Gaeilge but have taken on new forms. We move forward, reviving and renewing both Gaeilge and Hiberno-English - in continuity, honoring the deep rhythms of the land. This video is both a memorial and a renewal. The Land does not forget. I include 5 pieces of music that I have composed to listen to while this longer video plays the Litany of Names in Gaeilge and English. This is also a call to review and update the past and current records of Dunmore's townlands with accurate names, spelling, and translations in Gaeilge. "Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent." - Victor Hugo Thank you for watching and listening.
