For the first homebrew of the year I'm looking to experiment with the water profiles for an Oatmeal Stout Extract recipe from Northern Brewer. Extract brewing is perfect for experimentation because its a quick brew day and you can split up the five gallons into smaller fermentation kegs with different water profiles. I will brew one batch of Oatmeal Stout with reverse osmosis water to see how the Briess malts perform on their own. Briess uses their own water profiles when making their dry and liquid malts but its not clear online what that profile is. The second batch will be brewed with a London Dark Ale water profile found on my Brewers Friend app. The third batch will be brewed with a more extreme water profile that one of my favorite breweries uses to make their amazing Oatmeal Stout. At the end of the fermentation and conditioning process I will have my friends and family do a blind taste test to let me know which stout batch they prefer.
