Last week a KM3NeT Neutrino ORCA33 detector on scale model 1:60 was presented in the entree hall of Nikhef (National Institute for Subatomic Physics). It was built as a Friday-afternoon-project by staff and students. This model is a rescaled version of the KM3NeT ORCA-33 detector, which lies in the Mediterranean sea about 40 km off the coast of Toulon at a depth of 2450 meters. ORCA stands for Oscillation Research with Cosmics in the Abyss. In the real ORCA detector the Detection Units (DUs) are about 200 m high, the vertical distance between Digital Optical Modules (DOMs) is about 9 m and the horizontal distance between DUs is about 20 m. In this scale model the model detection lines are about 3 m, the LEDs (DOMs) are separated by 15 cm vertically and the detection lines are 33 cm apart horizontally. The LEDs (DOMs) are enlarged by roughly a factor of 2. The events shown are real ORCA-33 data. It can play prerecorded event files or real time data with a delay of 6 seconds from the bottom of the sea to our model. Each illuminated light corresponds to a triggered DOM, with more than 1200 PhotoMultiplier Tube (PMT) hits. In the real detector, these events unfold over only a few microseconds. For this display, the events are shown over 12 seconds, corresponding to a slowdown by a factor of approximately 2.5 million. Position of the lines on the plate are derived from the real position on the seabed. On top of the plate, all lines are electrically connected and connected to the network from which the real data signals can be sent.
