It’s easy to believe that strong speaking presence comes from having the right words, delivered with confidence, at the right moment. In this week’s Speaker Workout, I explore a paradox I see repeatedly in leadership communication: the behaviours that feel risky in the moment are often the ones that build the greatest authority, trust, and presence. In one word: pause. In high-stakes meetings, moments of tension, or when emotion enters the room, the instinct is often to fill the silence — to clarify, justify, or regain control. Yet it’s frequently the leader who can hold the space, without rushing to speak, who is perceived as calm, powerful, and in command. In this video, I reflect on: Why silence feels uncomfortable What’s actually happening physiologically in those moments How pausing allows others to catch up, regulate, and engage more deeply And why this one habit can quietly change how you’re experienced as a leader If you’re curious about presence, influence, and the subtle differences between competent leadership and impactful leadership, you’ll find something to work with here.
