(4 Sep 1995) English/Nat US envoy Richard Holbrooke has held talks with Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic. Holbrooke said they had had a "very productive meeting" but wouldn't give details. European Union mediator Carl Bildt was also in Belgrade - he said it was time that the Serbs make a significant gesture for peace. The US envoy to former Yugoslavia met Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic Sunday night after a busy day briefing international delegations about his mission. SOUNDBITE: "I've just come from Geneva where we met with the Organisation of Islamic Countries (sic). We briefed them on what the situation was. Little delayed but I'm going to join my colleagues who are already meeting with President Milosevic and that's really all I have to say." (Question: What was the schedule for today?) "What was the schedule for today? We met with Foreign Minister Sacirbey of Bosnia in Brussels, had a very serious talk with him about the major issues - understand his and his government's views more clearly. There's a wide gap between the two sides on certain key issues - above all the map - but we're going to keep working it through. We also met with Vitaly Churkin, the Russian Ambassador in Brussels, to brief him and met with the European Union commissioners. Then Carl Bildt and I flew here together from Geneva. I will be meeting President Milosevic right now and Carl Bildt tomorrow morning. SUPER CAPTION: Richard Holbrooke, US Envoy to former Yugoslavia Holbrooke and Milosevic talked for three and a half hours but they did not achieve any significant breakthroughs. The next morning Holbrooke emerged from his hotel looking tired and not holding out any hope for a quick agreement. SOUNDBITE: "Another meeting, another meal, another difficult but constructive discussion on the huge issues that still divide the two sides. I would be misleading you if I suggested we made any progress last night on specific things, the work ahead is very, very great." SUPER CAPTION: Richard Holbrooke, US Envoy to former Yugoslavia The European mediator in Yugoslavia followed Holbrooke out of the hotel, on his way to meet President Milosevic. SOUNDBITE: "I think obviously the current situation, which is a serious one, and I hope that everyone understands the gravity of the choice that the Bosnian Serb leadership and the Bosnian Serb military leadership is faced with and I sincerely hope that they will make that decisive gesture for peace which I think is called for. And then of course we are going to discuss the other issues which must be part of a wider political settlement." SUPER CAPTION: Carl Bildt, European Union Mediator Holbrooke Monday travelled on to Greece for more meetings. The foreign ministers of Yugoslavia, Croatia and Bosnia are expected to meet on Friday in Geneva for preliminary talks, along with members of the Contact Group.
