These are pests that survive during the cold winter months by finding warm places to harbor. Overwintering pests can invade your home without you even realizing. Oftentimes, you’ll see an influx of pests in the springtime, coming out as it gets warmer outside. These are most likely pests who overwintered in or around your home. IDENTIFICATION: The first thing you will want to do is identify your pest. Some of the most common overwintering pests that you’ll see are ladybugs, stink bugs, cluster flies, boxelder bugs, and crickets. These insects are all different from one another, but the tips and control products in this video will control these insect pests and many others. INSPECTION: Thoroughly inspect your home and property. You need to have an understanding of where and how pests are entering your home. Start outside and walk around your home, checking entry points that pests use to get inside. Check spots like overhang vents, loose chimney flashing, openings in walls, missing or damaged grates, missing or worn door seals, damaged or loose window screens, openings where pipes or wires penetrate the walls, cracks in the foundation, seals around roof vents. Be sure to note all of these areas because this is where you’ll be treating and repairing. CONTROL: For complete control, we recommend using a combination of liquid concentrate, insecticidal dust, and aerosol spray. Start outside with Reclaim IT. Reclaim is a repellent insecticide concentrate that is labeled to kill 70+ different pests and offers a residual for up to 90 days. The mix rate can vary depending on the targeted pest, so always read the label for proper mix and usage rates. You'll want to mix Reclaim with water in a pump sprayer. Create a barrier around the perimeter of your home by spraying 3 feet up the structure and 3 feet out. Also make sure to focus on common entry points that you might have found during the inspection step. Spray around windows, around doors, along eaves, around air vents, where plumbing penetrates the wall, around garage doors, exterior light fixtures, and basement or crawl space openings. Don’t forget to treat areas of the yard with dense bushes or shrubs. Next, use D-Fense Dust inside. This is a ready to use insecticidal dust that is perfect for hard to reach areas. Because it is a dry dust, it can easily be applied to spots inside walls or behind appliances. If left undisturbed, it can last up to eight months. There is a small applicator tip in the bottle, but we suggest using this with a handheld duster. Apply the dust under appliances, behind baseboards, wall voids, behind electrical plates, and in the attic. Finally, for any stragglers that you see, use Pyrid. This is an aerosol that is used as a contact and space spray that delivers a quick kill. Spray Pyrid around or on any insect activity. PREVENTION: The key to preventing overwintering pests from invading in winter is applying pesticides at regular intervals and addressing any entry points you found. Repair damaged screens and door seals. Seal entry points with caulk, expanding foam, or copper mesh. Don’t let vegetation creep up to the exterior of your house. Note any tree limbs that contact the roof. And reapply Reclaim IT every ninety days for guaranteed control.
