Taiwan researchers say that traditional Chinese medicine may support patient recovery from COVID-19. The National Research Institute of Chinese Medicine carried out a trial that administered a traditional Chinese formula along with Western pharmaceuticals. Scientists say that 12 out of 14 patients recovered within 10 days of receiving the hybrid preparation, which is believed to have inhibited virus replication. Traditional Chinese medicine has also been tested in China, where it''s endorsed by one of the country''s most preeminent doctors. But it has been banned in Sweden, where officials are skeptical of its medical value. A traditional Chinese cure called lianhuaqingwen is being touted as helpful for mild cases of COVID-19. It''s started to be exported from China to other countries. The former president of the Chinese Medical Association, Zhong Nanshan, has endorsed the treatment. Dr. Zhong Nanshan Chinese Medical Association former head For example, it can help a patient recover faster from the sense of full-body discomfort. So we think lianhuaqingwen is most suitable for average, moderate cases of coronavirus. Swedish media reports that Sweden has banned the drug without any formal trials, on the basis that its main ingredient is merely peppermint oil. In Taiwan, traditional Chinese medicine practitioners looked to SARS case studies to find new cures for COVID-19. A trial took place with 14 patients taking a combination of Chinese and Western medicine. Within 10 days, 12 of the patients recovered, testing negative for COVID-19. Doctors say that''s a good outcome. Dr. Su Yi-chang Traditional Chinese medicine researcher The patients were taking medicines that had been filtered and diluted, anywhere from five to 20 times, and it still had an excellent inhibitory effect on the disease. It still worked at about 80% efficiency. The research team found the treatment seems to stop the virus from reproducing in a person''s body. In severe cases, it can also help prevent a cytokine storm, when the person''s own immune system gets out of control and begins to harm the body. On a symptomatic level, it reduced fever, and stabilized heart rate and blood pressure. The team has applied for official certification for the treatment. Dr. Su Yi-chang Traditional Chinese medicine researcher The treatment seems to have a clinical effect. More importantly, these patients didn''t experience any side effects, nor did it affect the Western medicines being used. At first we didn''t want to publicize this, because we were afraid people would go and use traditional Chinese medicines without a prescription. The Ministry of Health and Welfare confirmed it has received the application, which is awaiting further consideration.
