Come with us on a visit to Scotland’s Orkney Archipelago, a collection of islands just northeast of mainland Scotland. The number and quality of the archeological sites throughout this collection of islands is impressive. We visit several in the week we are here, but there are many more an eager explorer could enjoy. We truly felt the Scottish spirit in Orkney as we tasted their Scotch Whiskey, watched a bagpipe parade and walked in the welcoming towns of Kirkwall and Stromness. A very special part of our time here was a visit to the Italian Chapel – a beautiful worship space created by Italian Prisoners of War during World War II. To increase morale during imprisonment, Allied commanders for this camp brought in two huts that would typically be used for barracks and allowed the prisoners to construct and decorate a place to worship and have fellowship. The prisoners collected metal from scuttled navy ships and fashioned them into the ornate iron gate and railings you see inside the chapel. There were some very talented painters in the group, as you will see. Join us next time as we cross over to mainland Scotland, tour the city of Inverness then begin our transit of the Caledonia Canal! Thanks for watching!
