J-MASS INSTAGRAM: @jmassofficial This has been one of my most requested locations to explore, and today we're finally checking it out: the abandoned Clinton Train Tunnel in Clinton, Massachusetts! The Clinton Train Tunnel was founded all the way back in 1903, servicing passenger and freight trains shuttling back and forth between Northampton and Boston along the Central Massachusetts Railroad. In 1897, construction began on the Wachusett Reservoir in Clinton, which resulted in heavy flooding; as a result, pre-existing train tracks had to be rerouted. Eventually, a viaduct was constructed that brought the train tracks across the nearby Nashua River, connecting it to the Clinton Train Tunnel. The tunnel would be used frequently up until the 1930s when ridership began to decline; by 1958, the Clinton Train Tunnel had been abandoned entirely. Since then, the viaduct was demolished in 1975 and the railroad tracks were torn up and removed. The tunnel still sits in the forest today, located right nearby the gorgeous Wachusett Reservoir and the monolithic Wachusett Dam. I've been to the Clinton Train Tunnel well over a dozen times, and it's one of my favorite abandoned locations in Massachusetts--truly an icon! This 1,110 foot long tunnel is fascinating to walk through: from the west portal, there is a 228 foot long lining of concrete, which then disappears and turns into raw, blasted granite. The cold, damp, and dark atmosphere gives the tunnel a creepy vibe! There's also a really interesting optical illusion that many people experience while walking through the tunnel: they say that no matter how deep you go into the tunnel, the other end looks like it's the same distance away from you. Nonetheless, I would recommend the Clinton Train Tunnel to any urbex enthusiast: the graffiti-covered walls that disappear into the darkness from one end to the other are fascinating. Just bring waterproof boots, as this tunnel gets very wet and damp!
