Liszt Grandes Etudes (S137) no 9 (difficulty rating 7.5/10) One of my favorites from this set, and one of my most often played pieces! This is mostly a study in "cadenzas" (you know those fast improvisation-like things that Liszt writes) along with some amount of fast arpeggios and chords, but nothing like in 7 or 8. In this S137 Grande version, there is also quite some mixing of accompaniment chords with thematic material which can be a bit troublesome. That's mostly gone in the Transcendental S139 version. The slow pace can be a bit misleading because this is not an easy etude at all once you see the cadenzas. Some will say that this and some of the later Liszt etudes are a study in "musicality", but I very much disagree because there does not need to be an etude for musicality, meaning the choices or interpretation a pianist may take in a piece (having a focus on phrasing or voicing is another story). This etude doesn't really have tricky voicing in my opinion, but it does also require some fine touch in the cadenzas and to not "lose the melody in the chords" as other difficulties. There are some sections that also emphasize phrasing.
