On this day in 1927, Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez was born. Known affectionately as Gabo, García Márquez became one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century. His novels One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera helped define the literary style known as magic realism — blending everyday life with elements of the extraordinary and the magical. When writing One Hundred Years of Solitude, Márquez struggled financially and even sold his car to support his family while he completed the book. The gamble paid off: the novel became a masterpiece of world literature and helped earn him the Nobel Prize in Literature. Today’s poem is “In Time of Plague” by Thomas Nashe. Written in the 16th century, its haunting refrain reminds us of the fragility of life and the fleeting nature of earthly wealth and beauty. ✨ Today’s reflection: Perhaps we can all bring a little magic realism into our own lives — seeing the wonder hidden within the ordinary. 📖 Poetry Changes Lives — a daily journey through poetry, history, and reflection.
