Explore the abandoned house of a man with a heart of gold

Explore the abandoned house of Hubert Richardson. His father, Captain Irvine Richardson, moved his family from New Brunswick to the Gleichen Alberta in 1906 due to heath reasons. He passed away at 50, leaving his 17 year old son Hubert to farm the land and take care of his mother and sister. Hubert laboured for years, even after the passing of his mother Annie (1949) and sister Bessie (1969). Hubert had a hunched back and a big dog who went everywhere with him. The dog would sit in the passenger seat like a human while Hubert peered through the steering wheel like a ghost driver. He was an opinionated man with a secret heart of gold. He never married and had no children. Upon his passing in 1985, Hubert left a substantial amount of money to the Alberta Children's Hospital. They were so moved by his generosity that they named the new paediatric wing after him. The house has been abandoned ever since and stands today for sentimental reasons. It's a forgotten reminder of a selfless man who never asked anything from anyone, yet gave everything to help the next generations of children to come. Special thanks to 92 year old Vern Hoff, a well respected pioneer in the area who told the story of the elusive Mr. Richardson. Permission Required.
