The 100 Point Scoring System (from www.robertparker.com): 96-100: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume. 90 - 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines. 80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws. 70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine. 60 - 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors. 50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable. Vivino - It is one of the most widely used tools in the wine world. Sommeliers and Wine shop owners have told me about customers who get out their phones and tell them that the wine they suggested actually does not have a great rating from the community and/or should be cheaper. Needless to say, wine professionals generally hate the app as it can ruin the fun of taking your guests on a tasting journey, but also because it takes away some of their power. With Vivino, consumers can look up most wines in the world and have information about their quality, price, variety, and so on at their fingertips. Not all of the information is useful, but the app is empowering them to make better decisions overall. That is why I am intrigued by Vivino, even if I do not need the app. So today I want to put Vivino’s ratings to the test by reviewing some of their highest-scoring wines. On Vivino, wines are rated using a 5-star system. Vivino claims that a 4.0 Star rating is the equivalent of 90 points on the 100-point scale – I don’t think that is correct, though. They also say that a 4.5-star score equals 93 points on the 100-point scale, and they say that: “Wines rated 4.5 are even more extraordinary, as they are better than 99 percent of the wines you see on Vivino. A rating above 4.5 means you’ve found something truly rare and special. So let’s have a look at the top 1% of wines rated on Vivino to hopefully find some undiscovered gems, suggested by the crowd.
