Stiff upper necks and upper neck pain can be absolutely brutal (trust me, I would know). While there can be numerous reasons as to why your upper neck joints are stiff or painful, there are thankfully some pain-relieving exercises that can be done at home to help improve your range of motion from the joints and reduce subsequent pain or discomfort. The exercise in this video goes over how to perform an orthopedic technique known as the SNAG (Sustained Natural Apophyseal Glide), which is a movement technique developed by Brian Mulligan, a physical therapist. When performed for the appropriate indications and when utilized with the appropriate intensity and parameters, this exercise can help restore range of motion to the first and second cervical joint of the upper neck and even stretch one of the suboccipital muscles (the obliquus capitis inferior). Please make sure this technique is appropriate for you to perform (see medical disclaimer below), as there are contraindications for performing this exercise (i.e. reasons not to perform this movement technique). This movement should always be pain-free and should only be done with an intensity that produces a mild and tolerable stretch to the upper neck. If this exercise helps you out, you can perform it a few times per day, and hopefully, within a week or two, you will experience noticeably reduced chronic neck tightness and discomfort in your upper neck! *** TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 - Intro 0:27 - Why learn this technique? 1:00 - Housekeeping items 1:58 - Performing the SNAG 4:03 - How and why this technique works 4:58 - Shoutout to the developer of this technique 5:07 - Final words & request *** My: website: https://www.strengthresurgence.com *** Interested in becoming a physical therapist or just want to know a bit more about the profession?
