At the end of our Torah portion, Mishpatim (laws), the text returns to the Israelites’ preparation for receiving the Law. It is the day before Moses’s ascent to Sinai, and the people pledge in one voice, “na’aseh--we will do” what G-d commands. Later in the same narrative, they emphasize “na’aseh v’nishma—we will do and we will understand.” Here, doing precedes the need to understand. Many of the laws have set times and requirements, such as lighting Sabbath candles 18 minutes before sundown. There are other times when we have an inner knowing that action is required of us before we understand why, or why right now. When we fail to follow that guidance, we often experience regret. When we do act unquestioningly, we may understand the importance later. Or never. But paying attention to the inner voice is its own reward. In our meditation today, we attune to inner connection with the Source of wisdom, aligning our breathing with the four letters of the sacred Name.
