How Research Shapes Postharvest Water Safety Description: This webinar provided a scientific overview of antimicrobial use and management in postharvest water systems, focusing on mitigating cross-contamination risks in packinghouses. Presenters highlighted how sanitizers function as control points, emphasizing their role in preventing the transfer of pathogens rather than simply reducing microbial loads. They also covered key differences between single-pass and recirculated water systems, the impact of organic load on sanitizer efficacy, and how these findings related to regulatory expectations and industry audits. The webinar showcased real-world data on inactivation curves and cross-contamination risks through targeted research on various commodities, including tomatoes, cucumbers, citrus, tropical fruits, leafy greens, and tree fruits. Attendees learned how research-backed validation studies can support decisions about antimicrobial concentrations and change-over schedules/change schedules.
