George Askwith is a former committee member of Dorset Humanists. She takes a leading role in Humanist UK’s Faith to Faithless community group which provides support to people leaving high control religions. This engaging talk will explore how early Christian communities understood and navigated issues of sex, gender roles, and identity. Our speaker sheds light on the theological, cultural, and social influences that shaped early Christian views and practices. We discover how these historical perspectives continue to influence contemporary discussions on sex and gender within the church. Image: 7th century icon of Saint Sergius (or Serge) and Saint Bacchus (Kiev Museum of Western and Eastern Art). They are among the earliest Christian martyrs, venerated particularly in Eastern Christianity. The nature of their relationship has been the subject of much discussion. Some scholars have suggested that they might have been lovers, pointing to the intense personal bond between them as reflected in early hagiographies and their joint veneration. The Byzantine rite refers to them as "erastai" (lovers), which has led to this interpretation. The Q&A session included some strong (illustrative) language, and George began the talk with a "trigger warning".
