Potassium Permanganate + Sucrose: Better Firemaking through Chemistry

I’ve seen lots of videos on YouTube of firemakers using a stick or rock to grind and ignite mixtures of Potassium Permanganate and table sugar (sucrose) through friction. Most just randomly combine roughly equal amounts of each component and grind away to make fire. It’s easy to do and works pretty much every time, but I wondered if I could improve upon the idea by working out the reaction equation. From there I thought I might be able to determine an optimum mixture to ignite. This video is the result of that quest. Overall, the ideal mixture by weight of 22:3 (Potassium Permanganate: Sucrose) is the mark to meet if you want to be efficient in the use of your materials. Precise measurements aren’t really required, though, and if you decide to err on the slightly rich side (that is, by adding a little extra sugar to the mixture), that’s probably OK.
