The future of higher education is about engagement in deep, immersive, experiential learning—the kinds of scholarly opportunities that teach highly valued skills such as problem solving and oral and written communication. Too many students are getting through college as passive learners: listening to lectures, memorizing narrow sets of information, and then repeating the information on multiple-choice tests, only to forget it days later. Participation in authentic research and creative scholarship should be the defining experience of college for every student in every program, so that all students get to tackle questions that matter, experience the thrill of discovery, and develop the skills that will serve them well for decades to come. Jenny Olin Shanahan is Director of Undergraduate Research at Bridgewater State University, where she oversees a multidisciplinary program of over 1,400 students a year conducting high-impact scholarly work. Previously she was Director of the Honors Program and Associate Professor of English at St. Mary's University of Minnesota. Dr. Shanahan holds a Ph.D. in Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the United States from Marquette University. She and her husband Michael have two hilarious teenaged sons. They live in Easton, Massachusetts. Giving a TEDx talk is right yp there with some of the most exciting opportunities of Jenny Shanahan's 21-year career in higher education. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
