Best Rap Albums of All Time, Best Hip Hop Albums of All Time, Best Rap Album of Each Year, Best Hip Hop Album of Each Year, Modern Music Mayhem Hip hop music or hip-hop music, also known as rap music and formerly known as disco rap, is a genre of popular music that originated in the Bronx borough of New York City in the early 1970s by African Americans, and it had been around for years prior before mainstream discovery. This genre of music originated as anti-drug and anti-violence, while consisting of stylized rhythmic music (usually built around drum beats) that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. According to the professor Asante of African American studies at Temple University, “hip hop is something that blacks can unequivocally claim as their own”. It was developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching with turntables, break dancing, and graffiti art. Other elements include sampling beats or bass lines from records (or synthesized beats and sounds), and rhythmic beatboxing. While often used to refer solely to rapping, "hip hop" more properly denotes the practice of the entire subculture. The term hip hop music is sometimes used synonymously with the term rap music, though rapping is not a required component of hip hop music; the genre may also incorporate other elements of hip hop culture, including DJing, turntablism, scratching, beatboxing, and instrumental tracks. Everybody has their own taste in music and metrics as for what they look for in a good hip hop album. That’s what makes discussions like these interesting! Today, we cover the three best rap alums of each year; starting from 1987 all the way to 2023 (the present year as of when this video was made). What defines a good hip hop album? Well, that’s entirely subjective. Everybody has their own personal taste and preferences, and these were our choices for the best of each year. We typically do not take influence into too much consideration, which was still the case with this video as well. We built this mostly off of quality of the music alone. We limited it to the top three of each year simply due to to efficiency. Making a top five for each year would be very cluttered visually, and would’ve been even more challenging for early years when the genre wasn’t as popular as it is today; along with more competitive years in the future. It was already challenging enough to narrow it down to three albums. Speaking of limits, we set a hard limit of an act appearing twice per year at the number one spot. We tried our best to make the list as varied as possible, only putting repeat names if absolutely necessary. For positions two and three however, an act could appear as many times as needed. For the limit, please bear in mind this DOES NOT count individual members of groups, or groups themselves. Say, for example, if Wu-Tang Clan took the number one spot two years, individual members would still be eligible to appear at the number one spot. Although we did try to limit this as much as we could Kanye West's “808s & Heartbreak” as well as Tyler The Creator's “IGOR” and Mac Miller's “Circles”; whilst all amazing to us, are not rap albums. As such, they will be exempt from this list. However, if they were to be included, they would all rank at number one for their respective years. We took a lot of precautionary measures to make sure that this video (hopefully) doesn’t get blocked. This will be the last time we will remake this. Some of the songs we played were just the instrumental; due to these songs being blocked on initial copyright test uploads of this video. For some of these rankings; specifically 2020-2022; they’re practically identical to our “Best Rap Albums of 2020/2021/2022” lists. Definitely let us know what your favorite albums of each year were! They don’t even need to be hip hop albums!
