The Holy Spirit did amazing things in Mary's life. First, she was visited by an angel and told that the Holy Spirit would come upon her such that she would conceive the Son of God. The Life of Christ would inhabit her for nine months, and that life is in separable from the Holy Spirit. We should not be surprised when we read what happened next, when Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth, who was also pregnant, in Luke 1, verses 41-44: 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!” The Holy Spirit was active in the life of Mary and all those around her. Elizabeth prophesied. The baby leapt. In the verses that follow, Mary proclaims a prophecy of her own which is known as the Magnificat. The Holy Spirit can accomplish amazing things through those who, like Mary, accept His presence in their lives. That promise is open to you today. Jesus Christ offers the Holy Spirit to his disciples. When you become a Christian, you and everything around you will be imbued with new life and purpose through the Spirit. Jesus called it being born again, because allowing the Holy Spirit to come upon you creates a new life within you, just like it did in Mary. The Spirit of the Son of God will take up residence in you and lead you into a fullness of life and peace that you never imagined possible.
