Is it possible for God's people to bless themselves? Yes-- by our confessions and when we spend time meditating in the Word, by our speech and actions, we can bless ourselves and be a blessing to our families and brethren. The extent to which we can reap the benefits of a faith-guided lifestyle depends on how much faith we exercise-- because all of us have been given a measure of faith by God the Father who desires to prosper us so that we can enjoy living the abundant life Christ Jesus came on earth to give us (Romans 12:3; John 10:10). But if we don't use our faith, we can and will lose it! When God called Abraham to leave his father's house and his kindred to go to a land that He would show him, God told Abraham that his faith and willful obedience would enable him and his spiritual offspring to bless themselves ((Genesis 12:1-3). We are all children of Abraham in the Spirit (Galatians 3:7). Why so? Because Father Abraham is symbolic of the kind of faith that God expects us to exercise in order to have the things we hope for here on earth (Hebrews 11:8-10). What's more,Christ Jesus was and is before Abraham (John 8:58); He is indeed "I AM," the author and perfecter of our faith. While Jesus was on the earth, He pioneered our faith, showing us how we, like Father Abraham, can bless ourselves, be a blessing to our families and others, and enjoy the abundant life while we are here on earth-- provided that we learn how to exercise our faith.. Abraham's faith allowed him, Isaac, Jacob and their spiritual descendants to enjoy prosperity, and to be a blessing to their spiritual offspring, who would also be able to bless themselves (Genesis 26:1-5 & 28:13:14). So, how can we be assured that our faith will be strong enough to get us safely through the attacks of evil that will surely come simply because of who we are? Three scripture lessons can help us to stay focused. First, we go to Joshua 1:1-9. Joshua was appointed by God to succeed Moses at Moses' death; God instructed Joshua to meditate on the Word day and night, and three times told him to be very courageous because the enemies the Israelites would face were strong; and he would need to rely on his faith to produce the courage that would enable him to enjoy victory over all the strong armies he and the people would face. The second scripture we need to examine is Habakkuk 2:1-4 & 3:17-19. Here, Habakkuk had a complaint to God that He was allowing the Chaldeans to ravage the land. God instructed the prophet to write his complaint down on paper, spelling out the vision Habakkuk had of a land free of the Chaldeans; and to publish it-- i.e., to post it where all the angels could see jt-- and to be patient, allowing his faith to see his vision manifested on the earth. And Habakkuk said that he would wait until he saw his vision come about on earth, no matter how bad things might get while he was standing and believing, before his vision became manifest. God told Habakkuk that the righteous live by faith, and Habakkuk believed God. If we will take note of what God instructed Joshua and Habakkuk to do, and do likewise, we should be able to bless ourselves. It really comes down to our faith, and our courage in the heat of battle. Finally, Ephesians 6:10-18 instructs us to take the whole armor of God into battle with us-- not to neglect a single piece of God's armor, and to use it to ensure that we can defeat the enemy and bless ourselves. It should be well for us to always remember that without spiritual knowledge and a vision, God's people perish (Proverbs 29:18 & Hosea 4:6). So, to prove our right standing with God, we must be willing and able to stand on what we hope for until the test is over and we have the thing we visualized in the beginning of our test.
