Víctor Estapé: El Sur guarda un puñal (2019) Ana Benítez, guitar Würzburg, October 2, 2020 Early in 2019 I was asked by my colleague Oliver Rappoport, one of the artistic directors of the Barcelona Mixtur Festival, to contribute with a work for the Guitar Workshop Concert of the Festival. The Guitar was indeed my first instrument, but I hadn’t written any guitar work since I was a teenager, so it was time to do so. I was very happy for having this welcome chance to compose music for such a beloved and fascinating instrument, but I really felt doubly blessed when I met the guitarist who was going to perform it: Ana Benítez had fully understood and learned my work “El Sur guarda un puñal” in an astonishing short period of time, and she premiered it on April 27, 2019, in a wonderful and highly convincing rendering that took in account the most subtle details of sound and expression. In October 2020, Ana Benítez surprised me with a gorgeous video recording of my guitar work, made at the Hochschule für Musik in Würzburg, Germany (with Jürgen Rummel as audio and video engineer). I am extremely happy to be able now to share this work in such a great performance, I couldn’t dream of a better one. “El sur guarda un puñal” (that could be translated as “The South keeps a dagger”) is a line borrowed from the poem “El Tango” by the unique Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges. En los acordes hay antiguas cosas: el otro patio y la entrevista parra. (Detrás de las paredes recelosas el Sur guarda un puñal y una guitarra.) [There are old things in the chords: The other courtyard and the half-seen vine. (Behind the wary walls, The South keeps a dagger and a guitar.)] I think that he title conveys the nature of the experience of writing for, playing, and listening to the guitar, an instrument whose characteristics and the relationship of the performer with the extremely complex physical object that it is, have a very strong influence on the music written for it. The title gives also some hint of my love for Flamenco music, to which I pay a sort of homage in “El sur guarda un puñal”.
