Miquel Keenan Fuentes, cello Kein Bruchstück for cello solo (2020), by Víctor Estapé Amsterdam 24-10-2022 I composed "Kein Bruchstück" back in 2020, thus fulfilling a long treasured wish to write a work for cello solo, a wish that had its origins in my love for the Bach Suites. In April 2020, amidst the lockdown caused by the Covid-19 pandemic I wrote an arrangement for 8 cellos of the Catalan folk song El Cant dels Ocells (The Song of Birds), made worldwide known by Pau Casals, that was recorded by a group of cellists of the Liceu Conservatory in Barcelona under the expert and sensitive guidance of prof. Amparo Lacruz. The video ( • El cant dels ocells, Pau Casals. Octet de ... ) was intended as a mourning tribute to the victims of the pandemic. The consequence of my deep involvement of those days with the wonderful beauty of the Cello sound and its incomparable expresivity was starting the composition of "Kein Bruchstück" (which title can be translated as “No fragment”). I am so grateful to this extraordinary cellist and musician, my colleague Amparo Lacruz for her musical advice while working on Kein Bruchstück and for having arranged the premiere of the piece for the Cello Biennale Amsterdam of 2020. The pandemic, still raging at the time, prevented this plan from coming true. I was extremely happy that the Liceu Conservatory student Miquel Keenan Fuentes, one of the best pupils of prof. Lacruz, and one of today's most promising young cellists, followed her advice to learn the piece and to prepare for premiering it at the Cello Biennale Amsterdam 2022. I was deeply impressed to experience this amazing event, that gathers cellists, students, luthiers and cello lovers from around the world (among them many leading figures of Cello performance and scholarship), with a rich program of concerts, masterclasses and lectures. The Biennale 2022 featured a concert by a group of 10 cellists, Liceu Conservatory students and graduates, under the direction of Amparo Lacruz. During this great concert, Miquel Keenan Fuentes delivered the outstanding first public performance of "Kein Bruchstück" that I am so glad to be able to publish now. My deepest gratitude to Miquel and to Amparo, for having made it possible.
