By Kasabula Muchimba Government says trained and licensed artisanal miners will be granted access to areas where illegal mining activities have been halted, as part of efforts to formalise the sector. Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Paul Kabuswe told ZNBC News that the decision is aimed at transforming illegal mining operations into regulated and lawful activities. Mr. Kabuswe warned that illegal mining will not be tolerated, as it poses a threat to national security. He added that unsafe and unregulated mining methods can cause serious environmental damage and put lives at risk. He explained that the move forms part of Government’s strategy to formalise artisanal and small-scale mining, improve safety standards, and ensure mineral resources benefit the country through proper oversight and taxation. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security said law enforcement agencies will remain deployed to enforce compliance with legal procedures in affected areas. Principal Public Relations Officer Mwala Kalaluka said security wings will work alongside mining authorities to prevent a resurgence of illegal activities and maintain order. The National Union of Miners and Allied Workers (NUMAW) welcomed the move, saying formalising the sector will create structured employment and protect vulnerable young people who have been exploited during illegal operations. NUMAW General Secretary Steven Mwanga noted that many youths involved in illegal mining work in dangerous conditions without protective equipment and in unstable pits that have led to injuries and deaths. #ArtisanalMining #Formalisation #SafeMining #YouthProtection #ZambiaDevelopment #MiningSector
