In this lecture, Prof. Dr. Hussam Timani (Christopher Newport University, USA) explores the concept of wealth in Islam with a focus on Qur’anic teachings, historical context, and contemporary challenges. He also reflects on the ongoing debates about capitalism, Islamic finance, and economic justice in the modern Muslim world. This lecture was part of the Key Concepts in Interreligious Discourses (KCID) series held from September 25–27, 2024, at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) and hosted by the Bavarian Research Center for Interreligious Discourses (BaFID). 🔍 In This Lecture: Pre-Islamic Arabia and the socio-economic background of the Qur’an Qur’anic teachings on wealth, justice, and the responsibility of the wealthy The role of zakāt, ṣadaqa, and fair trade in building an equitable society The prohibition of ribā and its ethical foundations Wealth, poverty, and the balance between private property and social solidarity Modern debates on Islamic finance, capitalism, and the politics of research funding About the Conference: The KCID, a predecessor of BaFID, organizes triannual English-language conferences featuring internationally renowned scholars. These conferences explore central concepts across Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, fostering rich interreligious dialogue. Dr. Timani is the author of several books and numerous articles on classical and modern Islamic religious thought and is an active speaker on Islam and interreligious understanding.
