The area initially developed into a celebrity enclave due to its remote nature and proximity to studios during the Golden Age of Hollywood. In the 1960s, Wonderland became a center for the counterculture movement, with countless prominent folk and rock musicians taking up residency. By the late 1970s, the neighborhood was besieged with criminal activity, including cocaine distribution, which was controlled by the infamous "Wonderland Gang". Gang activity came to a head in 1981, when the neighborhood became forever linked to the "Wonderland Murders", which was a grisly quadruple homicide.
