Mount Olympus Neighborhood Tour (Laurel Canyon) Laurel Canyon / Hollywood Hills / Los Angeles Episode 235 Mt. Olympus is a neighborhood in the Laurel Canyon area of the Hollywood Hills. The 300-acre neighborhood is known for its upscale housing and wide streets. The plot that became Mt. Olympus was formerly known as "Goatland" before it was developed, due to its steeply sloped area comprised of mostly scrub and sage. The groundbreaking for Mt. Olympus took place in June of 1963, with early reports estimating that 12 million cubic yards of earth would need to be removed to provide flat building sites. Developed in the 1960s, the entrance gate has decorative "Greek columns", and the street names (Apollo Drive, Achilles Drive, Electra Drive, Hercules Drive, Jupiter Drive, Oceanus Drive, Venus Drive, Vulcan Drive, and Zeus Drive) are taken from figures of Greco-Roman mythology. Architectural critics have not been kind to Mt. Olympus in their appraisal. Detractors have described the area as “an exercise in 1970s vulgarity that is to neoclassical architecture what a toga party is to ancient drama". With another reviewer describing the neighborhood as "reminiscent of Las Vegas casinos with slightly smaller lots and a tackier look”. Music by Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio
