In this video Dr O'Donovan (medical doctor) and Ella Boys (physiotherapist) cover a step by step demonstration of different exercises you can do at home following a total, or partial hip replacement. These exercises can help to speed up your recovery from a hip replacement operation. Who is this video for? This video is for those who have recently had a hip replacement operation. Regular exercise to restore strength and mobility to your hip and a gradual return to everyday activities are important for your full recovery after total hip replacement. Your orthopaedic surgeon and physical therapist may recommend that you exercise for 20 to 30 minutes a day, or even 2 to 3 times daily during your early recovery. They may suggest some of the exercises that you see in this video, which is intended as a video educational guide to supplement your own rehab program. What is a hip replacement? Hip replacement surgery (sometimes called total hip replacement) involves replacing damaged parts of your hip joint with metal, plastic or ceramic parts. It’s most commonly used to treat pain and stiffness in the hip joint caused by osteoarthritis. It may be recommended if other treatments or lifestyle changes have not worked and hip pain and loss of movement is affecting your daily life. Tips for recovering from a hip replacement operation: 1. Regularly walk every day as far as it is comfortable – talk to your physiotherapist if you have any problems 2. Follow the exercises your physiotherapist has recommended wait at least 6 weeks to drive (check with your doctor that you’re fit to drive) 3. Try to avoid sex for 6 to 8 weeks after you operation 4. Return to work when you feel ready – this usually takes about 6 weeks, but will depend on the type of work you do 5. Sit in a reclining position, but also try to avoid sitting still for long periods of time – this will help with swelling ****** VIDEO CHAPTERS: 00:00 - Introduction 00:23 - Early post-operative exercises following a hip replacement 00:25 - Ankle Pumps 01:34 - Ankle Rotations 02:16 - Heel sliders 03:31 - Buttock contractions 04:39 - Hip abduction 06:16 - Quadriceps set 08:30 - Straight leg raises 10:01 - Standing exercises following a hip replacement operation 10:28 - Knee raises 11:58 - Standing hip abduction 13:24 - Hip extensions 14:46 - Advanced exercises 14:53 - Advanced exercise 1 - Resisted Hip Flexion 16:40 - Advanced exercise 2 - Resisted Hip Extension and Abduction *Website resources* American Orthopaedic Society hip rehab program (USA): https://orthoinfo.aaos.org/en/recover...
