As you walk, inhale through your nose for 4 steps, then exhale through your mouth for 3 steps… hence the odd number. The footfall you begin on changes after every 7-step cycle to keep you in balance. You can change the step count at any time to a 5-count or a 9-count. But it must be an odd number in the breathing pattern. Inhale evenly and rhythmically through the nose and exhale through your mouth. Focusing your energy on the counting 4-in, 3-out will allow you to block out and let go of what is stressing you. This allows you a clear peace-of-mind. To unwind during a stressful time in your life, don’t just veg out in front of the TV, get outside, begin walking and then start the Odd Number Breathing Pattern to activate the relaxation response.
