How do African worldviews reshape Shakespeare on the British stage? Director Mojisola Kareem and playwright Oladipo Agboluaje unpack Crown of Blood in conversation with Dr Francis Alowolo on African Voices Platform Radio. This in-depth conversation explores Crown of Blood, Utopia Theatre’s major production staged at Sheffield Theatres, re-imagining Macbeth through Yoruba cosmology. Kareem and Agboluaje reflect on power, leadership, and moral consequence as communal and spiritual forces and on the responsibility of African-led storytelling within British theatre today. Drawing on Macbeth as source material, Crown of Blood re-centres the story through Yoruba cosmology, interrogating power, ambition, loyalty, and consequence as communal and spiritual forces rather than purely individual failings. In this discussion, Kareem and Agboluaje speak candidly about artistic responsibility, adaptation, and what it means to assert African worldviews with confidence on major British stages. Hosted by Dr Francis Alowolo, the conversation situates the production within wider questions of African Theatre practice, cultural leadership, history and the infrastructure required to sustain serious, African-led work in the UK arts ecology. This interview marks African Voices Platform’s final editorial contribution as media partner for Crown of Blood, closing a body of coverage dedicated to documenting not only performance, but the thinking, labour, and values behind the work.
